What Happens if You Drive Without Insurance?

Insurance is required for all drivers in the UK, but if you're someone who does not currently carry a policy, you may wonder just how serious the consequences of your actions might be. First, it's important to realize that you're not alone. Instead, nearly a half million motorists a year receive penalty points on their licences because they don't have vehicle insurance. In the UK, it's illegal to drive anywhere without at least 3rd part insurance, and even if the car you're driving has insurance but you don't, you may still end up facing a stiff penalty.

A Closer Look at the Penalties

Once you've been pulled over, the police may choose to issue you a fixed penalty of £300. In addition to that penalty, though, you may also end up with 6 penalty points. In some cases, though, the police may choose to prosecute you in court, and if that's the case, the penalties are far more drastic. Unlimited fines are within the court's power and you could be disqualified from driving for some time. Police can also seize and destroy vehicles that are being driven without insurance.

Does It Really Matter?

Besides facing so many penalties and fines, obtaining proper coverage really does matter, and not just to you. Drivers who choose not to get the right coverage are actually a burden to other drivers, as car insurance rates are quite a bit higher because there are so many uninsured drivers out there. One Daily Mail article suggested uninsured drivers add £33 to the cost of every single policy sold in the UK.
